The Royal Melbourne is one of Victoria’s largest hospitals providing a comprehensive range of health services including acute, sub-acute, general, and specialist medical services throughout inpatient and community based facilities. We are looking for passionate and dedicated individuals to join our Immunology team. This is a fulltime permanent position, working 80 hours per fortnight, based at The Royal Melbourne Hospital

Your Opportunity:

  • The successful applicant will join the existing pool of grade 3 scientists within pathology and will report to the grade 4 scientist, principal scientist and Immunopathologist
  • They will manage the Immunology laboratory which comprises the areas of Autoimmune Serology and Allergy and be willing to undertake both administrative tasks as well as participate in routine analytical testing
  • Services provided includes screening and characterisation of autoantibodies including neuronal, skin, skeletal and steroidal antibodies
  • A wide range of methodologies including indirect immunofluorescence, ELISA, radioimmunoassay and automated immunoassays are utilised
  • Instrumentation includes the Phadia 250, BioFlash, Quanta-lyser platforms
  • A high level of skills in the manual interpretation of immunofluorescence is required
  • Skills in the development and troubleshooting of automated or manually performed Immunoassays is required
  • Other duties include staff training, management, administration of the external QA program, education seminars, rostering, stores and other duties as required
  • Additional background knowledge and experience in flow cytometry, genomics, protein electrophoresis and / or mass spectrometry would be advantageous. 

About You:

We are looking for the following essential requirements:

  • A Bachelor’s degree in science or in applied science, or an equivalent qualification
  • A Fellowship of the Faculty of Science of the Royal College of Pathologists of Australasia, or a Fellowship of the Australian Institute of Medical Scientists, or equivalent, or
  • A Doctorate of Philosophy in a subject relevant to Immunopathology scope of practice. (The successful applicant must meet the definition of a ‘Clinical Scientist’ as define by the NPAAC Supervision Document)
  • Minimum 5 years’ relevant medical laboratory experience in a tertiary hospital or private Immunology laboratory
