  • 80 hours per fortnight, including ADO

Your Opportunity:

The National Enterovirus Reference Laboratory located within the Victorian Infectious Disease Reference Laboratory (VIDRL), at the Doherty Institute, has a vacancy for a Grade 3 Medical Scientist.

The Medical Scientist will assist in all facets of the activities of the enterovirus laboratory and the WHO Western Pacific Polio Regional Reference Laboratory. This role will also be responsible for deputising in the absence of the Section Head.

The primary focus of this position will be both to perform and oversee the following:

  • Enterovirus isolation, typing and phylogeny
  • Molecular biology of enteroviruses including diagnostic PCR
  • Polio antibody testing
  • Clinical surveillance for cases of acute flaccid paralysis
  • Undertake research projects
  • Participate in planning and quality improvement projects
  • Contribute to peer reviewed scientific publications

About You:

  • 8 years’ experience in classical clinical microbiology skills (virus culture) and molecular biology skills
  • Understanding of the requirements to comply with ISO
  • Ability to organise and conduct work with minimal supervision
  • Well organised, self-motivated, have a strong attention to detail
  • Good communication and teamwork skills
