Carer Consultant

  • Part Time ongoing role, working 48 hours per fortnight
  • Provide direct support and information to family and carers
  • Be part of the Community Team and be involved in their treatment and recovery planning

The North West Area Mental Health Service (NWAMHS) provides a comprehensive range of mental health services to adults aged between 16-65 who reside in the local government areas of Moreland and Hume. We have a key priority, the early engagement and active involvement of families and carers in the treatment of consumers.

 

As a values-based service, where the needs of consumers and their loved ones are priority, we deliver a range of services through our Broadmeadows Community residential Unit, Broadmeadows 25 bed Inpatient Adult Unit, Integrated Continuing Care Programs, Glencairn Private Consultancy Suites, Psychiatric Assessment and Recovery Centre 10 subacute beds (PARC) and Psychosocial Research Centre.

Your new role

  • Provide direct support and information to family/carers (telephone and face to face contact)
  • Provide information to support family/carers (regarding mental illness, relevant services, policies, dealing with challenging situations etc.), and assist with problem solving
  • Inform clinical staff of resources and supports available to family/carers
  • Be involved in their treatment and recovery planning as part of the Community Team
  • Refer family/carers to education programs, support networks and the Carer Support Fund, as appropriate
  • Demonstrate sensitivity to diversity issues (CALD, gender, age, sexuality, etc.)
  • Provide systemic advocacy by presenting the perspectives of families/carers in order to improve the quality and responsiveness of our services

About you

  • Demonstrated experience as a carer of an adult with a mental illness treated within the mental health system
  • A broad understanding of the differing perspectives of the impact of mental illness on family/carers and the consumer
  • Demonstrated understanding of peer work, systemic advocacy and educational/training processes
  • Ability to engage family/carers
  • Well-developed communication and interpersonal skills, including the ability to consult, liaise and work collaboratively with carers, consumers and professional staff
  • Demonstrated team work skills
  • Skills to organize and run carer support groups
