Graduate Certificate in Clinical Nursing - Cardiothoracics

The Royal Melbourne is one of Victoria’s largest hospitals providing a comprehensive range of health services including acute, sub-acute, general, and specialist medical services throughout inpatient and community based facilities. We are also a proud part of the world renowned Melbourne Biomedical Precinct, working in collaboration to advance research for continuous improvement of clinical care.

It provides general and specialist services and offers an exciting opportunity to further your specialty nursing skills through post-graduate study.

We build teams that embrace our values – caring, excellence, integrity, respect, and unity.

The Cardiothoracic Surgery Unit provides specialty post-operative care for a wide range of cardiac and thoracic surgical patients. The entire 30 bed unit is cardiac monitored, utilising specialised respiratory, pacing and digital chest drainage equipment to assist in delivering quality care.  Care for the more high acuity patients is provided in our 12 bed High Dependency Unit. In addition 6 of the beds in the unit are reserved for Cardiology patients. As a result, nursing on the Cardiothoracic Surgery Unit is extremely varied and interesting, involving elements of cardiac nursing, critical care and specialised surgical care.

If you are keen to develop your cardiothoracic nursing knowledge, utilise monitoring and other advanced equipment as well as expand your critical thinking and assessment skills; then undertaking a Graduate Certificate in Clinical Nursing (Cardiothoracics) is for you. The skills you learn are highly sought after and are a great introduction to caring for high acuity and complex surgical patients.

The Cardiothoracic Surgery Unit has an excellent culture, where the team is friendly and knowledgeable, with a high number of nursing staff having already completed post-graduate study.

Applications are now open for the Graduate Certificate in Clinical Nursing (Cardiothoracics). The Graduate Certificate in Clinical Nursing (Cardiothoracics) is conducted in collaboration with our affiliate university, Australian Catholic University (ACU) and students are employed in the Cardiothoracic Surgery Unit at The Royal Melbourne Hospital. This course is open to Registered Nurses who have successfully completed a Graduate Nurse Program.

About the Program:

The course consists of four (4) subjects which are delivered through a variety of teaching modalities, including lectures, tutorials, clinical simulation, online learning and worksheets. Assessment consists of assignments and clinical practice portfolios. Participants also undertake a supernumery rotation in the Intensive Care Unit and are given the opportunity to observe in cardiothoracic theatre. Post-graduate students are fully supported by a Clinical Nurse Educator who is based in the unit.

Program length varies from one to two years, however if you enter the program as a Grade Two Year Two Registered Nurse, the program must be completed over two years.
