Carer Peer Support Worker
Two positions available, Part Time Fixed Term until October 2018
About the Role:
We are looking for a motivated and resilient person with direct personal experience as a carer/family member of a person with a mental illness to provide peer support and information to mental health carers within the acute inpatient unit and community settings of Inner West Mental Health Services.
The work involves providing direct support to carers /families either face to face or via telephone contact at the time of consumer discharge from the inpatient unit and the transition to a range of other supports in the community.
The role aims to empower carers to identify their information and support needs, navigate the mental health system, and raise awareness of carer and consumer services and resources to carers/families as well as clinicians .
The carer peer support worker will work closely with other lived experience staff and with clinical staff of the inpatient unit and community service. They will also provide carer perspective and leadership to the Inner West AMHS where appropriate, and participate in evaluation processes. An ability to use knowledge and skills arising from lived experience of being a carer constructively for the benefit of others, as well as an understanding of peer support, broader carer issues, recovery principles and strong interpersonal skills are essential.
There will be an information session held to provide an overview of the role and requirements.
