The Royal Melbourne is one of Victoria’s largest hospitals providing a comprehensive range of health services including acute, sub-acute, general, and specialist medical services throughout inpatient and community based facilities. 5 North is looking for a motivated and enthusiastic nurse to join our team to work within the nursing services value of providing safe and reliable care via the person centred care bundle.

5 North is a gastroenterology / hepatology and acute geriatric orthopaedic unit. 

We care for patients with acute gastrointestinal diseases, liver failure, inflammatory bowel diseases and are part of the state-wide home TPN service as well as caring for patients over the age of 65 with fractures to the femur. 

The ward is strongly supported by a committed allied health team and a group of clinical nurse consultants who assist the ward with providing high quality care to our patients.  Our team works together to provide an inclusive environment not only for patients but for staff as well.

The person centred care bundle is the core of the nursing care that we deliver on the ward and is based on 5 principals;

1)      thorough and ongoing nursing assessment

2)      engaging patients in clinical handover at the bedside

3)      patient safety rounding

4)      patient whiteboards

5)      Safety huddles

The successful candidate should understand how these 5 principles work together to deliver high quality care to every patient, every time.


Your Opportunity:

  • Participate in a rotational shift work across all shifts and days 
  • Ongoing clinical education support is available from our clinical nurse educator and the leadership team
  • Provide comprehensive, holistic nursing care
  • Provide patient education and care that is safe and demonstrates the Melbourne Health values of caring, excellence, integrity, respect and unit
  • Responsible for direct patient care and is to report to the Associate Nurse Unit Manager (ANUM) and the Nurse Unit Manager (NUM)

About You:

  • Registration as a Registered Nurse with the Nursing And Midwifery Board of Australia
  • Demonstrated ability to practice collaboratively as part of the multidisciplinary health care team
  • Demonstrated provision of high quality patient care
  • Developed assessment, clinical reasoning, problem solving and prioritisation skills
  • High motivation and willingness to learn
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
  • High level of reliability and professional conduct
  • Recent experience in acute geriatrics, orthopaedics or gastroenterology settings

Selection Criteria Essential: A minimum of 2 years acute nursing experience in Australia, New Zealand or similar health system
Essential: Ability to work a rotating roster
Desirable: Previous gastroenterology, orthopaedic or acute geriatrics experience
