  • Exciting new opportunity to join the Emergency Mental Health Team at the Northern Hospital Emergency Department
  • Part Time Fixed Term until June 2021, working some afternoons and weekends

  • The Northern Area Mental Health Service (NAMHS) provides a comprehensive range of specialist mental health services to people who reside in the local government areas of Darebin and Whittlesea.
  • We are seeking an Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander person with relevant mental health qualifications or experience working in mental health or an acute health care setting
  • An exciting opportunity exists to join the NAMHS Emergency Mental Health Team at the Northern Hospital Emergency Department.
  • Clinical Programs provided by the NAMHS include: Adult Community Services (2 Community Teams), Adult Acute Inpatient Service (50 beds), EMH (including PACER) and Consultation and Liaison Psychiatry Service at the Northern Hospital, Community Care Units (CCU), Prevention and Recovery Centre (PARC)

A Job To Be Proud Of:

  • This is a new position and the successful incumbent will be provided both cultural and line supervision support.
  • Work with the Emergency Mental Health service that provides timely assessment, treatment and care to consumers that present to the ED with acute or suspected mental health concerns and require a mental health assessment.
  • Provide secondary consult and support to NAMHS staff to improve cultural safety
  • Support care coordination and make appropriate referrals to Aboriginal community service providers for consumers and carers
  • Work collaboratively with multiple stakeholders, including ED staff, NAMHS staff and Aboriginal Community Controlled service providers
  • Use your strong communication skills and ability to support consumers to understand and navigate the mental health and health care systems

Your Contribution: 

 

This is an Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander identified position.

  • Formal tertiary qualifications and registration with relevant professional body (Registered Psychiatric Nurse, Occupational Therapist, Social Workers or Psychologist) OR experience working in mental health or acute healthcare settings supporting the Aboriginal community.
  • Strong understanding of mental illness with experience working in a mental health or acute health care setting
  • Have knowledge and connection to local Aboriginal Community Controlled service providers and the Aboriginal community
  • Passionate about working with the Aboriginal community and keen to work intensively with consumers on their recovery journey
  • Comprehensive assessment and risk assessment skills (for clinically qualified applicants)
  • Skills in supporting consumers presenting with an acute mental health concern or high levels of distress
  • Ability to work in a fast pace environment
