NorthWestern Mental Health (NWMH) provides a comprehensive, integrated range of services to people with a serious mental illness in North-Western Melbourne. A multi-disciplinary workforce of 1,800 staff provides services through four Area Adult Mental Health Services (North West, Mid West, Inner West and Northern), an Aged Persons’ Mental Health Program and a Youth Mental Health Service – ORYGEN Youth Health. NWMH is a clinical service of Melbourne Health and operates in partnership with Northern Health and Western Health.

 

  

The Midwest Mental Health Service Adult Acute Inpatient Program (SAAPU), based at Sunshine Hospital, is a 29 bed service which provides therapeutic support for Mental Health consumers on their path to recovery. The service includes a state of the art Intensive Care Area designed to enhance therapeutic approaches with consumers.

The role of Occupational Therapist Grade 2 at The Midwest Mental Health Service Adult Acute Inpatient Program is diverse and highly rewarding. A flexible primary model of care is in place to enhance engagement with consumers, and the OT2 is actively involved in provision of therapeutic interventions and collaborative planning for recovery with the consumer, carers and stakeholders.

The SAAPU OT Grade 2 role provides clinical support, leadership in recovery orientated programs, and support to families and carers. This position is responsible for assessment, risk management/planning and treatment; including specialist occupational therapy interventions with SAAPU consumers. Liaison will occur with relevant inpatient clinicians and associated stakeholders, and to assist the SAAPU multidisciplinary team in the development of recovery focused interventions, as part of an integrated service system.

 

Key Responsibilities:

  • Work collaboratively with members of the multidisciplinary team and stakeholders, to provide occupational therapy services, individually and in groups.
  • Provide specialist consultations, assessments, and appropriate evidenced based occupational therapy interventions to assist in better outcomes for clients and families/carers.
  • Provide clinical expertise in assessment, risk management and decision making in the delivery of treatment and interventions to clients, maximizing participation in collaborative recovery and wellness planning.
  • Participate in clinical review meetings and other professional forums within SAAPU and the Midwest Area Mental Health Service, including occupational therapy meetings and forums.
  • Reflect recovery philosophy in the delivery of care.
  • Assist in planning, implementation and evaluation of any programs in response to identified needs.
  • Work collaboratively with Non-Government organisations, GP’s, private psychiatrists and others in the provision of quality care for clients and their families/carers.
  • Continuously seek opportunities for improvement; for example, innovative approaches to improve provision of care or to better address ward process challenges 
  • Work effectively with the SAAPU team by building relationships and encouraging the exchange of information and ideas
  • In conjunction with continuing care providers such as GPs, CMHSS etc, work to improve assessment, treatment, care, referral, discharge/return to community and follow up processes
  • Participate in practice based and service/occupational therapy orientated research, evaluation and audits as required

Your Contribution:

  • An approved degree from a recognised School of Occupational Therapy and eligibility for membership to   Occupational Therapy Australia
  • Current registration as an Occupational Therapist with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (APHRA) to practice with the National Board.
  • Experience and well developed skills in the range of occupational therapy assessments and interventions including work with individuals, families and groups, and community work, consultation and liaison
  • Demonstrated skill, experience and knowledge of issues associated with psychiatric illness and disability, and awareness of the impact of these on dependent children, family and carers including those from culturally and linguistically diverse communities.
  • Demonstrated ability to function effectively as part of and provide specialist secondary consultation to the multidisciplinary team.
  • Demonstrated commitment to ongoing professional development and ethical practice.
  • Experience in Sensory Modulation assessment and interventions.
  • Experience in the development, facilitation and coordination of a consumer therapeutic group program.
  • Experience working with a peer workforce.
  • A current Victorian driver’s licence.
