The Consultant Psychiatrist is a key clinical position within the Perinatal Mental Health Service (PMHS).  The role of the Consultant Psychiatrist is to provide clinical leadership within the clinical program and operate in partnership with the Maternal Health Services, Antenatal clinics and Primary Health Providers.  The Consultant Psychiatrist has a direct line reporting relationship to the Director of Clinical Services who will undertake the statutory responsibilities of an Authorised Psychiatrist as required by the Mental Health Act for the Area Mental Health Service.  These responsibilities are delegated to each Consultant Psychiatrist by the Authorised Psychiatrist.

 

The PMHS Consultant Psychiatrist provides high level clinical expertise within the PMHS with respect to the assessment and treatment of consumers with perinatal mental health related needs and their family/carers, and supports other clinicians and primary health care providers in the delivery of high quality mental health care.

 

As well as providing clinical leadership for the team, the PMHS Psychiatrist also has a role in supervising junior medical staff and in service development and maintenance of best practice.
