Victorian Infectious Diseases Reference Laboratory (VIDRL)

Medical Scientist, Grade 2/3.

 

The WHO Collaborating Centre for Reference and Research on Influenza is part of the Victorian Infectious Disease Reference Laboratory (VIDRL), located at the Doherty Institute, has a Grade 2 or 3 (depending on experience) Medical Scientist position available for a fixed term of 3 years, with the possibility of further extensions.

 

The Role:

The primary focus of this position will be to support existing scientists to perform various laboratory testing related to the Centres influenza surveillance activities. In addition a major focus will be to develop new assays as required and to have the ability to develop new areas of research or to participate in existing programs at the Centre. 

 

Your Experience and Skills:

  • A scientists with a PhD in virology or microbiology or immunology with a minimum of 3 years post-doctoral laboratory experience, preferably with a strong background in influenza or another respiratory virus such as RSV.
  • Classical virology skills (cell culture, growth of influenza viruses, and experience in various functional assays), molecular biology skills (PCR, sequencing, cloning, site directed mutagenesis and reverse genetics) extensive experience conducting in vivo mouse or ferret influenza studies as well as a range of immunoassays/serological techniques.
  • Experience in the production and purification of recombinant proteins or work with live viral vectors would also be welcome.
  • A strong publication record in peer reviewed journals. 
  • Ability to contribute effectively as a team member, but have the independence to plan, organise and conduct experiments with minimal supervision.
