The Royal Melbourne is one of Victoria’s largest hospitals providing a comprehensive range of health services including acute, sub-acute, general, and specialist medical services throughout inpatient and community-based facilities. We are also a proud part of the world-renowned Melbourne Biomedical Precinct, working in collaboration to advance research for continuous improvement of clinical care.

An exciting opportunity has become available to join the nursing team of 5 North at The Royal Melbourne Hospital. 5 North is a 20-bed ward that cares for a diverse patient population in two specialities gastroenterology and acute geriatric orthopaedics. This unique diversity means that no two days on 5 north are ever the same.

The Gastroenterology Unit consists of Hepatology (liver diseases), Inflammatory Bowel Diseases (IBD), Clinical Nutrition including one of the 4 hospital providers of Home TPN in the state of Victoria, Haematemesis and Malena unit as well as managing elective endoscopy patients requiring inpatient admissions.

5 North cares for patients over 65 years of age who have sustained a fracture of the femur. The patients are cared for under a shared care model of Orthopaedic surgeons and geriatricians.  This patient population is at high risk of delirium so a large focus of our care is in the recognition, prevention and management of delirium as well as ensuring these patients can recover their best depending on their other conditions.

This unit is well supported by a dedicated group of clinical nurse consultants specialising in IBD, nutrition, Hepatocellular cancer research and chronic liver disease. Together with the 5 North nursing team we aim to provide the best care for this diverse patient group.

Your Opportunity:

  • Working in these two diverse patient populations mean that a high level of nursing care and skill is required.  We achieve this by using the RMH nursing services patient care model “Person Centred Bundle of Care”
  • Provide high-quality standards of patient care. This includes the assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation for care in collaboration with the multidisciplinary team
  • Recognize the Registered Nurse responsibilities for delegation of nursing care
  • Assume responsibility and accountability for any delegated activities to an Enrolled Nurse. The Registered Nurse will also demonstrate an understanding of the Scope of Practice of the Enrolled Nurse when delegating and allocating nursing activities

  • Appropriate candidates may avail of further training for leadership roles and other opportunities within in the department.
  • Ongoing clinical education and support is available from our clinical nurse educator, clinical nurse consultants and the leadership team
  • 5 North is committed to ongoing staff development and the 5 North believes in the development of student nurses and graduate nurses and participates in both programs with the help and support of a robust preceptorship model.
