VIDRL is a leading Australian infectious diseases reference laboratory located in Melbourne, Victoria. It is now part of the Peter Doherty Institute for Infection and Immunity (the Doherty). VIDRL provides laboratory services for the Department of Health Victoria, Victorian hospitals and clinics, the Commonwealth Department of Health, and the World Health Organisation

We are looking for passionate, dedicated and self-motivated Medical Scientist - Grade 1 to join the State Reference Laboratory for HIV Characterisation. This is a Part Time, Fixed Term position, 30.40 hours per fortnight, based at Parkville.

Your Opportunity:

• Handling and processing of infectious materials for routine diagnostic work and clinical trial studies
• Performance of HIV quantitation assays using automated robotic platforms and characterisation of HIV strains for drug resistance. 

About You:

•  Minimum of a Bachelor of Science or Bachelor of Science (Hons) Degree and at least 2 years of laboratory experience
• Molecular skills and knowledge of techniques such as nucleic acid extraction, PCR both real-time and conventional (sequencing will be highly regarded)
• Ability to work independently and as part of a team
• Well-developed communication and organisational skills
• Extensive knowledge of NATA or ISO working environments
• Working knowledge of Microsoft programs (Excel/Word/PowerPoint)
