An exciting opportunity exists for an experienced Social Worker to join the Social Work Department in a part time role as a Grade 2 Social worker in the new inpatient assessment unit. This is a Part Time position, working 40 hours per fortnight (negotiable), based at the Royal Melbourne Hospital - City Campus and Royal Park Campus

The Royal Melbourne Hospital Social Work Department provides services across a variety of clinical areas including the Intensive Care Unit, Critical Care, Trauma, Surgery, Respiratory Medicine and General Medicine, Neurosciences and orthopaedics. As a member of the inpatient Social Work team, the successful incumbent in this role will be working in the newly created inpatient assessment unit, covering multiple units.


This is a significant opportunity to provide a high quality social work service to clients primarily in our acute setting and their families through your competent clinical skills, effective communication, and active participation within a well functioning multidisciplinary team environment. The successful candidate will be involved in the delivery of clinical service, supervision and education of junior social workers and undergraduate students and will be a member of our supportive team of experienced clinicians. This clinician will be expected to contribute to the strong research portfolio within the team. 

Specialisations and priorities for Social Worker’s working in public hospitals include effective care coordination, family or group work, client advocacy and advanced counselling.

-       A current Victorian driver's licence

-       Qualifications, which are acceptable for membership with the Australian Association of Social Workers. Must have eligibility confirmed.

-       Previous experience in working with clients who suffer chronic illness

-       Excellent interpersonal and communication skills;

-       Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively and as part of a team

-       Skills in comprehensive assessment, discharge planning and counselling;

-       Knowledge of the theory and principals of professional supervision;

-       Previous experience in providing professional supervision;

-       Knowledge and application of Social Work theory;

-       Ability to manage a demanding workload, and effectively prioritise tasks;

-       At least 4 years experience as a practicing Social Worker.
