About us


The WHO Collaborating Centre for Reference and Research on Influenza has operated since 1992 and is one of 5 WHO (World Health Organisation) designated Centres that is involved in human influenza virus analysis, influenza vaccine recommendations and influenza antiviral effectiveness monitoring. The Centre also has interests in other respiratory viruses (such as RSV and SARS-CoV-2) and conducts research activities across all of these areas.


Your new role


We are looking for passionate and dedicated individual to head the Epidemiology group at the WHO Collaborating Centre for Reference and Research on Influenza (WHOCCRRI), VIDRL.

 

This is a fixed term position with the possibility of extension based on the continuation of Government funding that is currently allotted every 4 years.


In consultation and with the support of the Director and senior staff of the WHOCCRRI, you will lead the epidemiology program at the Centre to:

  • Enhance the value of the Centre's virological surveillance by improving the representativeness of submitted samples and linkage to available epidemiological data.
  • Provide stakeholders with information on the prevalence and characteristics of influenza virus infections and disease burden in Australia and other countries in the Asia-Pacific region.
  • Present annual interim and final influenza vaccine effectiveness estimates.
  • Initiate collaborative research.
  • Prepare written reports and papers for publication in peer-reviewed journals, and present results at national and international conferences.

About you


You have formal qualifications in Epidemiology, as well as:

  • Expertise in designing and leading complex epidemiological studies.
  • Expertise in data management, statistical analysis and reporting using R software.
  • Strong written communication skills, including preparation of reports for government to guide policy, and peer-reviewed publications report research outputs.
  • Ability to build relationships and work effectively with collaborators in a range of environments, including government, public health laboratories and research organizations.
  • Track record of publications in relevant Epidemiological or infectious diseases journals.
